Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect is quite an interesting concept.
It is basically the idea that small causes may have large effects.
It makes sense. We see this everyday in our lives,
but the idea of The Butterfly Effect in context, in Chaos Theory
goes like this;
" This effect grants the power to cause a hurricane in China to a butterfly flapping its wings in New Mexico. It may take a very long time, but the connection is real. If the butterfly had not flapped its wings at just the right point in space/time, the hurricane would not have happened. A more rigorous way to express this is that small changes in the initial conditions lead to drastic changes in the results." - Fractal Foundation

It's really an interesting theory and though it may not be entirely true, it's something to ponder. Especially
the basic concept that small causes may have large effects- we know this.

As I watched the Swallowtail butterflies flying through the garden, going flower to flower it reminded me of this theory.
It also reminded me of something that has weighed heavy on my mind for a few years now, which is the effects of conventional farming practices on our ecosystem and how it effects us.
After living on 60+ acres of a working orchard in Northern California for 8 years, I am amazed at how much we are poisoning the land, creatures-including ourselves and the waters. Something I caught onto while living on this orchard was that pesticides and herbicides were being overused, not just on this orchard, but many others and other crops in the area. One reason was due to fearmongering by the pest control companies hired by the Orchardist and Farmers.
Why were the "bug guys" causing alarm?
Greed.
~For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.~
It is just too easy for them to make more money than necessary off of farmers.
Farming is very stressful, because it is so easy to lose a crop to pests or the weather.
There is a high rate of suicide among farmers. It's just that stressful.

I farmed for over a couple of years, organically, and it was tough.
I talked with other organic farmers back then, who did it on a larger scale than my two acre farm,
and I found that it is manageable, unlike what many people think. It just takes heart and more work than what these conventional farmers are doing.
Many farmers rely too much on farming corn and soy in the states.
Again, it's just too easy and such a money maker.

Unfortunately,
the pollinators are more and more diseased than ever
and dying off prematurely and in great numbers because of this.
~You know who else is more and more diseased? Humans.
Especially with odd diseases like Cancer, Alzheimer & Parkinson disease.~
We all hear about the bees.
Sure, we could get by without them, right? Maybe it would create more jobs?
Pollination by humans.
Or better yet, robotic bees. Or more genetically engineered crops?
There you go. Problem solved?

I much rather live in the natural world.
Where there are bees, butterflies, and birds to carry out the natural cycle.

Speaking of butterflies.

Pesticides have killed 90% of the Monarch Butterfly population in the past 20 years.
This is because of genetically engineered crops, such as corn & soy.
These crops are engineered to be tolerant to a very strong herbicide that
is killing the milkweed that Monarchs lay their eggs on.
Monarchs are frantically having to travel further to find milkweed,
and often die before they find it.

It's sad.
Why does man have to destroy creation to the point animals and plants are becoming extinct?
The fight for basic survival becomes harder and harder.
We are in the sixth mass extinction, and this time it is caused primarily by us.
This sucks!
I want to live my life being a good steward.
I am part of the amazing ecosystem.
I am a part of it. I am not apart from it.

I do small things, like garden organically, support organic farmers, recycling,
and try to avoid using synthetic chemicals and harsh chemicals, like cleaning products for example,
which are easy to replace with natural non toxic alternatives, like hydrogen peroxide (my favorite), vinegar, borax, baking soda, essential oils, castile soap, and good ol elbow grease.
And I can't wait to do even more.

I do these things because not only does it make me feel better physically, but
it also supports the quality of the land and waters. It also supports conserving habitats and biodiversity.
